Your best first-session plan

  1. Install and open Joe's Real Rolls, then follow the guided Introduction.
  2. Select or create the Dice Set you plan to use.
  3. Choose your camera by name. Use Refresh Cameras after connecting a new device.
  4. Secure the camera directly above the tray and keep it fixed after calibration.
  5. Set the Rolling Area, check the lighting, and calibrate the empty tray.
  6. Confirm Factory Baseline is the active model.
  7. Choose Standalone and make several ordinary test rolls.
  8. Review each reading. Train your own dice only if they need extra help.
Start with the Factory Baseline. It is a protected, restorable model built to provide a useful first experience across many dice styles.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • An overhead webcam or USB document camera with a clear view of the tray. Expensive equipment is not required.
  • Bright, even lighting and a matte rolling surface that contrasts with your dice.
  • Compatible d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and percentile dice.

The live camera view keeps the physical die visible while you review the recognized result.

Factory Baseline or personal model?

The Factory Baseline lets you roll on day one. Personal training is optional and creates a separate model for your active Dice Set. It never changes the protected Factory Baseline. You can restore the baseline whenever you want a clean comparison or dependable reset point.

Use Dice Sets to stay organized

Use separate Dice Sets for visually different collections, another camera or play location, or a focused model for favorite dice. Confirm the intended Dice Set before calibrating, training, or playing.

Free trial and full version

The free trial provides up to 100 completed rolls during its 30-day active period. Your local setup and personal training work carry forward when you activate the full version. A full subscription allows Joe's Real Rolls to be installed on up to two computers at the same time.

Choose how you play

  • Standalone: setup, Factory Baseline testing, training, and local recognition.
  • Foundry VTT: supported physical-roll requests and reviewed delivery into Foundry.
  • Roll20: physical-roll delivery through the Joe's Real Rolls browser extension.
  • Discord: requested physical rolls returned through the official Joe's Real Rolls Discord application.

Only one integration is active at a time. Confirm dependable recognition in Standalone before enabling automatic delivery. In version 1.31.5, selecting an integration automatically opens its window so you can continue setup without reopening it from the menu.

Troubleshooting your first setup

When something is not working, separate the problem into three parts: camera setup, local recognition, and tabletop delivery. Start in Standalone. If a fresh roll works there, the camera and recognition model are working and you can focus on the integration.

The camera is missing or the preview is unavailable

  1. Confirm the camera is connected and recognized by Windows.
  2. Close other applications that may be using the camera.
  3. Select Refresh Cameras, then choose the camera by name.
  4. Confirm Windows camera privacy settings allow desktop applications to use the camera.
  5. Restart Joe's Real Rolls after Windows can display the camera normally.

The Factory Baseline is not active

  1. Open Maintenance → Backup / Restore Saved Models and review the active model.
  2. If the Factory Baseline is not listed, select Download Factory Model while connected to the internet.
  3. Select Restore Factory Baseline, confirm the restore, and test fresh rolls.
  4. Confirm the intended Dice Set is active before testing again.

The first rolls are Unknown or incorrect

  • Do not begin by collecting a large training set. First confirm the camera is overhead, the dice are sharp, and the tray provides clear contrast.
  • Run the Lighting Quality Assistant and recalibrate with a completely empty tray.
  • Keep dice separated, still, and fully inside the Rolling Area.
  • Try several ordinary rolls with the Factory Baseline before deciding that personal training is necessary.

Controls do not fit on the screen

Resize the window and use the available vertical or horizontal scrolling. Joe's Real Rolls supports compact and scaled displays, but high Windows display scaling can reduce the immediately visible area.

The trial or full-version status is not updating

Confirm the computer has an internet connection, close and reopen the application, and retry the activation flow. Moving from the trial to the full version should preserve your local Dice Sets, settings, calibration, and training work.

Still blocked? Record the exact step, the status text shown in the application, whether Standalone recognition works, and which camera or integration you selected. That information makes Support Chat or email support much more effective.
