Why players keep physical dice
Dice are more than random-number generators. Players collect them for characters, campaigns, colors, materials and memories. A physical roll also creates a moment everyone understands: the dice leave your hand, hit the tray and decide what happens next.
Three common approaches
Manual entry: roll physical dice and type the result into the VTT. Simple, but it interrupts play.
Electronic dice: specialized Bluetooth dice transmit their own values. Convenient, but require dedicated hardware, batteries and a replacement for the dice you already own.
Camera recognition: a camera observes ordinary physical dice and software recognizes the result. This lets players keep their existing collection while connecting physical rolls to digital play.
Using camera recognition
Joe's Real Rolls uses camera-based dice recognition to read physical RPG dice in a defined rolling area. The accepted result can then be delivered to supported online experiences, including Foundry Virtual Tabletop, Roll20, and Discord.
Do you need special dice?
No proprietary electronic dice are required. Joe's Real Rolls is designed around ordinary RPG dice and supports the standard d4, d6, d8, d10, percentile d00, d12 and d20. Learn more about supported physical dice.
What makes a good setup?
A stable overhead camera view, a clearly defined rolling area and even lighting make recognition easier. The Factory Baseline is ready to use on day one. If visually unusual dice need more help, you can later replace it with a personal model trained for the dice you actually use.
