Use real dice with Foundry VTT instead of replacing the moment with a digital random-number generator. Joe's Real Rolls is a camera-based Foundry dice roller that recognizes compatible physical dice, lets you verify the camera reading against the visible dice, and returns the physical roll to Foundry.
See physical dice and Foundry VTT working together
Watch Foundry request a roll, Joe's Real Rolls recognize the dice, and the verified physical result return while MIDI-QOL and Dice So Nice remain part of the workflow.
The physical-dice Foundry VTT workflow is designed to feel familiar: Foundry asks for a roll, you roll at your desk, and the verified physical result returns to the game.
Install and prepare Joe's Real Rolls
Install the Windows application, connect a compatible camera, and position it over a stable dice tray.
Calibrate the rolling area
Use steady lighting, clear the tray, calibrate it, and confirm that the entire rolling area remains visible.
Prepare your physical dice
Use the Factory Baseline to begin or train dice from your own collection when a custom model is helpful.
Connect to Foundry VTT
Choose Foundry VTT as the active tabletop integration and confirm that Joe's Real Rolls reports a connected status. One integration is active at a time, so switching platforms keeps each session focused.
Answer the roll request
When Foundry requests an attack, check, saving throw, initiative or damage roll, roll the requested physical dice.
Verify and send
Compare uncertain camera readings with the visible dice, correct recognition errors when needed, and send the physical result back to Foundry.
Attacks, saving throws and damage with physical dice
These stills come from the live demonstration—not simulated mockups. Attack rolls and saving throws use the same d20 handoff, while damage can include multiple physical dice.
Foundry requests the required physical roll. Attacks and saving throws follow this same d20 request-and-response pattern. The camera recognizes the d20, the player verifies the reading against the visible die, and Foundry receives the physical attack result and captured-roll image.A multi-dice damage roll is recognized and totaled while Dice So Nice displays the virtual-tabletop animation.
Supported Foundry and D&D workflows
Foundry VTT and D&D 5e
The demonstrated workflow uses Foundry VTT v14 with D&D 5e 5.3.3. Supported actions include ability checks, saving throws, skills, attacks, damage and initiative. Compatibility can vary as Foundry systems and modules change, so review the current release notes when updating your game.
Single and multiple physical dice
Joe's Real Rolls can recognize one die or multiple dice where the requested roll and selected dice are supported. You can review uncertain values before anything enters the game.
MIDI-QOL
MIDI-QOL can continue coordinating automated D&D 5e workflows while Joe's Real Rolls supplies the verified physical result. The demonstration shows the two working together during combat.
Dice So Nice
Dice So Nice can still provide the visual flourish other players expect. Your real dice determine the verified physical result while Foundry displays a complementary on-screen animation.
Common Foundry physical dice questions
Can I use my own dice with Foundry VTT?
Yes. Joe's Real Rolls is designed for compatible d4, d6, d8, d10, percentile, d12 and d20 dice from your collection.
Do I need Bluetooth or electronic dice?
No. Camera recognition reads ordinary compatible physical dice, so the dice require no batteries, charging or radio connection.
Can it handle Foundry manual dice rolls?
Joe's Real Rolls provides a guided physical-roll workflow for supported Foundry requests. You roll at your desk, verify the camera reading against the visible dice, and send the physical result into the session.
What happens when recognition is uncertain?
Compact graphical dice cards and confidence colors make the result easier to review. Compare the camera reading with the visible physical dice and correct only recognition errors before the result is sent to Foundry. Camera and lighting guidance can also help difficult dice and colored rolling surfaces.
Foundry integration video transcript
Joe's Real Rolls works seamlessly with Foundry Virtual Tabletop, including popular modules such as Dice So Nice and MIDI-QOL. When Foundry requests a roll, Joe's Real Rolls tells you which physical dice to roll. The camera recognizes the result, you verify the reading against the visible dice, and the physical value returns to Foundry. Single-die attacks, saving throws and multi-dice damage rolls keep physical dice at the center of online play.
